The Moon Through the Signs – Natal and Transits
In Astrology, our Moon sign deals with how we understand and deal with our emotions and others. The Moon sign in our chart shows us who we are at our most vulnerable states of ourselves, while also telling us how we use that intuitive lunar energy to decompress and relax within our being. This placement (aside from our rising sign) is one that changes the most from sign to sign.
However, once we do know our Moon sign, that does not mean the actual moon never affects us. When the moon goes from sign to sign in our daily lives, its energy greatly affects us whether we realize it or not. I will be taking you through the Moon signs from how they’re expressed internally in our natal (birth) charts and how they’re expressed externally from the actual transits that affect us in our day-to-day lives.
Moon Signs
Moon in Aries
Natal:
Aries Moon individuals are those who may be a bit hyperactive when it comes to their emotions. These individuals may find it hard to deal with their emotions in an evenly processed way. Sometimes people with their Moon sign in Aries may need to be active or process their emotions through working out or doing some physical activity. Like a lot of Aries placements, they may get angry easily immediately and then be able to cool down right after, however, this may make them want to put their foot in their mouths when they spout off of the handle too quickly. If not in the right mindset, Aries Moon people can be very impatient and reckless with how they express their behavior. However, people with this placement can be prone to anger issues if they don’t properly release whatever release and inner turmoil, they could have at a given moment.
Transit:
When the Moon is in Aries, people may be excitable, a little restless with how we conduct ourselves through this transit. You feel like you need to work out (whether that may be running, jumping jacks, or even boxing). You will have energy that you want to expend immediately. Your attention span may lessen during the moon in this sign. Like that of a child’s mind, you may want to do a lot of activities but only do each activity for a short amount of time because something else will catch your interest. This is because Aries is a Cardinal sign meaning that they love to start engaging in things and starting various projects, but it may make a person not want to finish said project that they were working on.
Moon in Taurus
Natal:
As an exalted placement in one’s chart, having a Taurus Moon makes one very likely to love luxury. As Taurus is ruled by Venus, Taurus Moon individuals are the sensual and sexy side of the Goddess of Love’s persona. They’re incredibly hedonistic (I should know! I have a Taurus Moon) and they love indulging in their many desires. Whether that may be physical desires or shopping desires, they are a slave to what they want constantly. However, these are people who love to be homebodies. They love being cozy and indulging in relaxation. Because this is an exalted placement in Astrology that means that they are one of the best people who can deal with their emotions (aside from a Cancer Moon) in a reasonable way. Even though they may do it through comfort eating, they aren’t afraid of really focusing on themselves and what really makes them feel things. If not in the right mindset, because Taurus is an Earth sign, they might try to bottle their emotions in, but they’ll soon realize that that isn’t the best scenario for them because they’ll fall apart.
Transit:
This is one of those transits that may make you want to sleep in all day. The luxurious Taurus Moon in transit will make you feel like you’re laying down on a bed of feathers. It also may make you want to spend excessively as this is a placement with a bit of a shopaholic addiction. This is a transit that will really make you relax, leaving you almost immobilized in your bed or your couch because it will make you very drunk on sleep. Because Taurus is a Fixed sign, you may act a little stubborn towards matters or issues that you’re passionate about or if someone may invite you out, you may be adamant about staying in and doing nothing. The Moon in Taurus transit is truly a “self-care” transit. Pamper yourself and treat yourself while the moon passes through the sensual and intimate sign of Taurus.
Moon in Gemini
Natal:
Individuals with a Gemini Moon are a bit like Aries Moons in the way that they’re hyperactive in a childlike way. When it comes to their emotions, people with a Gemini Moon like to intellectualize their emotions heavily. Gemini is an air sign, and because it’s an air sign, it may not be able to properly deal with their emotions. A lot of the time individuals have a delayed reaction to their emotions or will try to take up hobbies and learn something in order to work through their inner turmoil. Gemini Moons usually, like Aries Moons, like to do something physical or something that works their mind because they have so much energy to expend. These people are the ones that like to watch documentaries or intellectual movies on their downtime because their mind is always going all of the time. These are people that can have someone nervous or erratic energy because of their always working mind. They never know how to turn it off.
Transit:
When the Moon is in Gemini (which is what the moon is in as I’m writing this, how cool!) you may tend to want to do a lot of things all at once. Your attention may want to be on a lot of subjects/projects at one time and you may find it incredibly hard to focus. You might be a little bit anxious than usual because your mind is going a mile a minute, but you will have a bunch of energy to get work done because you have all of this new expendable energy that needs to be let out somehow; especially if it’s an activity that has to do with the mind.
Moon in Cancer
Natal:
The best sign to have as a Moon placement because the Moon rules over Cancer! Cancerian Moon individuals actually take the time to process their emotions properly by doing whatever they need to do for that release. These people are homebodies like Taurus Moon people. They will do whatever they can to fully fulfill their hermit stereotype because it makes them feel at peace. These watery babes love putting on their favorite movie from their childhood and going back on nostalgic memories of reliving when they were younger. Emotions are their specialty, and if you want to talk about emotions they definitely will enjoy the deep chat. Because they are the maternal sign of the zodiac, they’re probably amazing chefs and love to cook when they’re at home. They definitely love to cook for their loved ones because their food is made with love.
Transit:
During the Moon in Cancer, you will feel inclined to stay in bed just like when the moon is in Taurus. However, the difference is that you may be in the mood to look towards your past than just simply relaxing. So that may be sparking up a convo with a friend who you haven’t heard from in a while or watching a childhood movie. You will definitely be watching Netflix or any streaming service all day with a bonus of baking or cooking some comfort food that you may not have in a while or that you’ve been in the mood for a while. If you invite friends over, you may dive into some deep emotional talks while they help you make some food because you want them to help make the food with love.
Moon in Leo
Natal:
When you have a Leo Moon in your chart, you instantly want to be the center of attention (this can be a conscious or subconscious decision). Leos are known for being the star of the zodiac as they are ruled by the Sun; these people love the attention that people give them, and love being adored. Like many Leo placements, they care a lot about their self-image when it comes to how they’re perceived. Leo placements always care about their reputation and want others to view them in a good light. However, when you put Leo in the area of the chart that deals with emotions, they may act out because they want to be validated. Validation is a big part for these signs of royalty, but you would never know it. Leo Moon individuals will only make a huge fuss when they’re not being adored, complimented, or fawned over. This is a front as they are in need of receiving the same warm, cheery, and sunny attitude that they give unto others. If people in their world who know them intimately can do this for them constantly, they’ll be purring like kittens.
Transit:
During a Leo Moon transit, you may feel the urge to be more vocal about wanting attention from a loved one. You may be feeling self-conscious and want to spruce yourself up for just you because why not? Everybody has got to look hot sometimes. During these transits, the moon in Leo may make you feel like you want to strut your stuff out in the world and have people look at you as the shining star that you are. Even introverts might feel like they want eyes on them, even in the smallest of ways.
Moon in Virgo
Natal:
With a natal Virgo Moon, a person will find a way to intellectualize all of their thoughts. Virgo, the other sign ruled by Mercury, shows us a different side of Mercurial energy. Gemini is the erratic and scatterbrained side, wanting to get any and every piece of information they can find for the sake of knowledge. On the other hand, Virgo is a lot more structured than its Gemini counterpart. Both are mutable signs, but they achieve the same results very differently. A Virgo Moon’s mind is like a file cabinet: they have a very structured way of dealing with their emotions. They will try to find a way to rationalize their emotions, whether it’s a negative or positive emotion. Virgos may seem detached when it comes to their feelings, but all that really means is that what they are displaying on their face and verbalizing out of their mouth has been filtered through numerous barriers. Don’t let this fool you though. Virgo Moons are secretly sensitive creatures. Their thoughts are erratic, like that of a Gemini’s, but they will hold an internal Socratic Seminar, and discuss what is going on in their head with their many counterparts, and discuss why it’s important to them. In a way, Geminis are the mad scientists and Virgos are the regular physicians.
Transit:
During a Virgo Moon transit, you may want to immediately clean your room. Virgos are synonymous with cleanliness and tidiness, and this may be the first thing that comes to your mind. You may find that you want to detach from your emotions and work through them in an intellectual way, maybe a word puzzle or something else mentally stimulating. If you have projects to do on your schedule, those will most likely get done as Virgo has a need for completely and excelling at anything they put their mind to. If you’ve been putting those projects off, now would be a good time to complete them because they would get done and get done well.
Moon in Libra
Natal:
With a natal Libra Moon, this will make an individual incredibly indecisive, but it will make them outstanding peacekeepers. Libra is the other side of the planet Venus. As a Cardinal Air sign, on one side, Libra likes to keep situations light and airy, while they also fight for the underdog and those whose voice wants to be heard. On the surface, these people may act like sweet pushovers, but they have a rage that isn’t apparent (like a lot of Libra placements) until they’re pushed over the edge. When it comes to their emotions, they will act as if nothing bothers them (this is their need for wanting to keep the peace), but really in order for them to express the anguish that truly plagues them, they need to be comfortable with someone before they actually open up around them. With this airy side of Venus, these are the fun people who love a playful romance because of the air sign quality to them. They want love to be exciting, exhilarating, and titillating, but sweet as ever. Like their Venusian counterpart, they adore retail therapy. However, the difference between Taurus and Libra is that Libra love to be intellectually stimulated with a conversation with others.
Transit:
During a Libra Moon transit, you could be more flirty than usual. Libra Moon, I like to think (Libra placements in general), are wood nymphs enticing someone into their domain. While under a Libra Moon, you may want to socialize more often than you’re accustomed to, especially if you’re an introverted person. Because Libra is a Cardinal Air sign, there will be a lot of energy to initiate projects or just introduce new things into your life. Since Libra is a part of Venus, it may be a day that you dress yourself up and go someplace nice or you can try to beautify your home and breathe new life into it. However, it may be a day you’re vulnerable towards aggression and won’t want to deal with it only because Libras are the peacemakers, but if someone pushed you too far, they’ll feel your wrath.
Moon in Scorpio
Natal:
When someone has their Moon in Scorpio, dealing with their emotions in any capacity can be a hard time. This placement is in its fall when it comes to moon signs. When I say that a placement is in its “fall” that means that the moon is difficult to deal with in this sign. In Astrology, there are different terms to discuss how a sign acts within a planet: detriment, domicile, detriment, and fall. Depending on what placement you have and where it lands in your chart. Scorpio Moon individuals feel their emotions come through in an intense way. Since they are a water sign, emotions come easy to them, but as a Scorpio placement, emotions are never just easy. If Cancer is a calm ravine or a sweet bubbling brook and Pisces is a dreamy waterfall, Scorpio is lightning ravaging the sea. It is the emotion that can be instant unbridled rage, but Moon in Scorpio people will never let you know. Scorpio is a sign that is about secrecy. They’ll never show you their cards or their emotions outright. They will only do that if you’re a person that they can wholeheartedly trust. People with the Moon in Scorpio will simply stare at someone whether they like them or not. The way that they deal with their emotions is by crying in solitude. They won’t reach out to anybody in need of comfort unless trust is involved. These are the types of individuals that will tell people their pain and anguish a year from the moment that it happened. These are the individuals that love listening to a person’s deepest and darkest secrets and will treasure them because they love finding out a person’s depth. Small talk is not something they’re interested in. They want to know what makes a person feel deeply.
Transit:
During a Scorpio Moon transit, you may want to be more secretive than usual. Whatever you feel like communicating with someone, you may want to keep it to yourself until a better time comes up to discuss the situation. You also may want to meditate and/or take a social media break. Taking in energy from so many other people (digitally and personally) can be quite draining especially as this placement natally can be prone to have psychic gifts. When it comes to your emotions during this transit, you may be prone to be more sensitive and might want to be more reclusive than you usually are.
Moon in Sagittarius
Natal:
Individuals with Sagittarius Moons are prone to an outburst or two. These mutable fire moon people are the ones that do things a little bit more recklessly than Aries Moons. Ruled by the planet Jupiter, Sagittarius placements can get away with being more reckless than usual because they might have luck on their side. These are the type of individuals that love to do any activity that engages their mind when they have downtime. Sagittarius is the opposite/sister sign of the sign Gemini. In Astrology, every sign has an opposite (or sister sign), and for Gemini and Sagittarius, this is what we like to call the “Gemini/Sagittarius Axis” because if you really think about it: Astrology deals with natural energy and different polarities of signs all of the time. You will encounter polarities time and time again in your lifelong study of Astrology. Sagittarius Moon individuals are the people that need to keep their mind always accelerating (even more than a Gemini placement sometimes). Because Sagittarius is the sign that rules over academia, religion, and travel, they are ones that usually want to go to a museum, watch an interesting documentary about religion, or buy a plane ticket and go somewhere just for the hell of it. When it comes to their emotions, like Aries Moon people, they will get angry first and process their emotions through deep thinking later. Fire placements in general will operate through “action first, think later” because they are motivated by action, excitement, and sheer recklessness. However, Sag Moons are the friends you can count on to try and pump you up when you’re down. Sagittarius placements are known to be quite the partiers, and when it comes to people they care about, they will always show them a good time.
Transit:
When the Moon is in Sagittarius, prepare to feel the fire. As a mutable sign in the moon, this will make you feel more reckless than the Aries Moon or Leo Moon transits. Sagittarius is all about thinking about what we’re doing on this muddy rock called Earth and trying to make sense of it all. If you’re prone to existential dread once and a while, you might do it more during this moon. Your emotions could be difficult to deal with based on the sheer fact that because Sagittarius is a mutable sign, your emotions could be prone to change a lot. However, with that being said, try to have a good time during this transit because planet Jupiter would want you to.
Moon in Capricorn
Natal:
Aside from Scorpio Moon, having a Capricorn Moon is one of the hardest Moon placements to have in one’s chart. Because Capricorn is the opposite of Cancer, this sign falls in the Detriment of this placement. Having a placement in Detriment means that the planet ruling over said sign will be weakened, and in the case of Capricorn, that is extremely accurate. When it comes to emotions for Capricorn Moon individuals, they would rather be devoid of them completely. They find them unimportant and completely insignificant. Because of this, they never truly take the time to digest and unpack their emotions whenever they need be. Capricorn Moons have a huge problem of feeling like their emotions are invalid. Because Capricorn placements are known to be entrepreneurs and incredibly hard workers, they would rather push their emotions aside and work on a project they have to do. Working through their trauma is and process their trauma through diligent work will make these people open up even more than they thought they could. However, they must be wary of burying themselves in their occupation to escape their problems.
Transit:
During the Moon in Capricorn, you may feel driven to take care of business that you have been procrastinating on. You may also feel colder towards emotional or sentimental subjects and only want to take care of projects that need to get done. Not wanting to waste any time when it comes to the bag is a part of a Capricorn Moon’s MO, so this transit may find you networking with other people to further your career goals, applying for jobs, or simply looking for jobs to apply to in the future. Like a Virgo Moon transit, this is one of the transits that really makes you get on your feet and accomplish the work you set out to do in the first place in hopes that it provides a future for you.
Moon in Aquarius
Natal:
Aquarius Moon individuals are completely detached from their emotions. This may sound similar to the Capricorn Moon individuals, but Aquarius Moon people are running from a different mindset. They don’t think emotions don’t matter, they just don’t know how to tap into that emotional side of themselves. Aqua Moons are incredibly emotional people, but it’s suppressed. They only open to people that they put the utmost trust in, and even then, it can be hard for them to open up to the people they love and trust. Because Aquarius is an air sign and having an air sign in the placement of the moon, this makes their mind race when wanting to settle down a relax. Aquarians are the messengers of the zodiac. They are the water bearers for a reason. They love to take in information and transform it into something completely new. They are the innovators of the zodiac and when they have a certain vision, they will do whatever it takes to make it a reality. Aquarius is the last sign in the Fixed modality (Taurus, Scorpio, Leo, and Aquarius), and because of this, Aquarius placements can be extremely stubborn. With Aquarius Moons, they can be extremely stubborn when it comes to expressing their feelings. They may process their emotions through tinkering with someone because Aquarius’ can be obsessed with technology. Because they are the innovators of the zodiac, they want to create and work on new things when it comes to technology and humanitarianism. Aquarius Moons are gregarious as well with a little bit of a God Complex only because they are the types of people to wanting to be different. They want to be seen as the quirky friend who’s into indie bands that no one has heard of. However, this may end up making them feel a tad bit ostracized, especially when they want to make friends, but they have a bad habit of seeing as though they’re better than others.

During an Aquarius Moon transit, you could feel as if you are detached from life around you. You may feel like you want to do a complete 180 on anything that you’re doing. Anything emotional could be unimportance to you. It won’t feel like y0u need to deal with your emotions at this time. If there are any disagreements you have with anybody, during this transit you will be able to look at it from an objective point of view. However, because Aquarius is a fixed sign, you may be incredibly stubborn in your argument and your reasoning.
Moon in Pisces
Natal:
As the last sign in the zodiac as a whole and the last of the water signs, Pisces is an intense placement to have anywhere in a person’s chart. Pisces Moons individuals are incredibly sensitive to the environment around them. Typically, water signs are psychic in some capacity, but Piscean individuals of any placement are even more so. They feel their emotions so intensely that they may want to escape from reality from time to time. Pisces placements in general love escaping from the reality that they live in. Pisces, itself, is a highly spiritual sign. They always want to become one with Spirit/God and commune with otherworldly forces because that’s what they find important in this life. However, Pisces Moon individuals may use drugs or alcohol as a coping mechanism for dealing with their emotions in a healthy way. I know a lot of people who have Pisces Moons, and most of the time they love to be sad while getting drunk or high. Their way of expelling their emotions is to escape mentally and not deal with the situation at hand. Pisces Moon people need to be careful when it comes to their sensitivity and their emotions and remember that they need to immediately deal with the problem and not try avoiding an issue that they have.
Transit:
During a Pisces Moon transit, people can be incredibly emotional. You could be doing nothing of importance and start crying at the drop of a hat. You may feel like reality is too much for you, and at a certain point, you may feel the urge to drink to take the pain away or smoke to escape what’s plaguing you at the present moment. Pisces Moon transits are usually good times to meditate and venture into yourself and ask what’s really bothering you and how you can overcome it.
