Maddy Davis Creates a Pleading Love Anthem with, “Sally! I Met A Boy”

Over recent years, the broad range of indie pop has welcomed dozens of outstanding fresh faces to the industry. Self-taught rising artist, Maddy Davis is the pure definition of indie! Her eccentric style and nostalgic sound have moved Davis from performing in her mother’s basement to showcasing her talents on-stage at USC Thornton School of Music. Her latest release, “Sally! I Met A Boy'' tells the story of Davis confessing her love for a new guy to her older sister, Sally. Although her sister is well aware of her failed relationships, Davis wants to make it known that things are much different now. 

This track creates a vibrant, Y2K aesthetic that takes me back to my days as a youth. One thing that stood out to me in the track was the hard-hitting chorus. The screams of Davis singing, “Sally, I met a boy and he says he really loves me,” captivates the entire vibe of the single. It’s almost like you can hear the pleading through her vocals. As someone who’s quick to fall for someone, this track really hit home for me! She did an amazing job creating a scene  I could vividly paint in my head using my own past situationships. This artist is doing the best she can to persuade Sally that this boy is different from the rest, and trust me, I know this feeling all too well. 

Maddy Davis has always written songs based on her life situations. Through her small yet masterful discography, her listeners journey through Davis’s young mind. In her last record, “Middle Kid”, we get an inside on some of the never-ending thoughts and unspoken truths of growing up being the middle child. Her lyricism throughout these tracks is undeniably raw and easily relatable to almost anyone; which is something as a listener that I genuinely admire.
